Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today held talks with Wen Jiabao, the Chinese counterpart at the Great Hall in Beijing in a bid to boost bilateral cooperation as she underlined the need to deepen the "comprehensive partnership" with Beijing. Today they signed three accords (Economic and Technical Cooperation Agreement, Framework Agreement on Shahjalal Fertiliser Factory, and the Agreement on the 7th Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge) with China, aimed at strengthening cooperation in the fields of economy, technology and infrastructure. They have also signed a memorandum of understanding on oil and energy cooperation.
Beside this the two prime ministers discussed a number of projects, including the Chittagong-Kunming railway and road links through Myanmar, second Padma Bridge, deep seaport in Chittagong, eighth Bangladesh-China Friendship Bridge, capacity-building in agriculture, telecommunications and solar energy. Hasina, who arrived here on a landmark 5-day visit, met the Chinese premier and exchanged views on enhancing the bilateral cooperation. Qin Gang, the Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said Beijing highly values prime minister’s visit. China hopes that her visit would contribute to the steady development of Sino-Bangladesh ties, he told media briefing here today. China is expected to announce offer its support to Bangladesh to develop its strategically-significant deep-sea port in Chittagong, as well construction of road and railway linking Kunming, in south-western Yunnan province to Chittagong via Myanmar to give access to China to make use of the port. Bangladesh plans to increase the port's handling capacity three-fold by 2055, from the present 30.5 million tons of cargo to 100 million tonnes. Access to the port will be granted to India's north-eastern states, Nepal, Myanmar as well as to China. Later this visit Hasina is also scheduled to visit Kunming, the capital of Yunan province will serve as one end of the proposed trans-border road and rail link with China connecting Kunming with Chittagong through Myanmar.
