The telecoms regulatory commission (BTRC) shut down private land phone operator RanksTel on Friday. The telecoms regulator bring allegation for running unlicensed VoIP operations.
Bangladesh has suspended operations of three private phone operators in less than a week for allegedly running unlicensed phone services. Before RanksTel they shut down all activities of WorldTel Bangladesh Ltd & Dhaka Phone. The Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission closed the offices of Ranks Telecom Ltd, or RanksTel, a private firm licensed in 2004 as a public switched telephone network (PSTN), as the government was suspected that the operator runs an illegal business using Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), for which it is not licensed. Three RanksTel officials were detained following an overnight raid by Telecommunications Regulatory Commission officials assisted by Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) of the company's main office at Novo Tower in the capital's Tejgaon industrial area, which reportedly uncovered evidence of illegal operations. RAB detained some RanksTel officials including general manager (engineering) Sheikh Kamruzzaman, deputy general manager (engineering) Mominur Rahman Chowdhury and deputy general manager (sales) Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan Noman. RanksTel chief operating officer Abul Kalam Shamsuddin told that, “BTRC shut down all operations of their main switching room at Novo tower and sealed the offices at around 9am and he denied the allegation to involve in any illegal VoIP operations.” He also informed , “BTRC's raid lasted over 12 hours, but they didn't find anything illegal.”
