Monday, 29 March 2010 00:00

Chittagong, Bangladesh: Leader of the Opposition in Parliament and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia arrived in Chittagong Monday afternoon. She addressed her first public meeting at the historic Laldighi Maidan in the port city of Chittagong after the 2008 general election.  The public meeting, apparently was a huge showdown of the opposition, after taking office by the Awami League-led grand alliance government, had generated huge enthusiasm among the rank and file of Chittagong city unit of the party.

Khaleda Zia, addressing a sea of supporters in Chittagong, rallied her party leaders and activists to prepare for an anti-government movement. On Her speech she said, “Today is a warm-up rehearsal. Get ready for movement”. The former prime minister Khaleda Zia declared  to that grand rally, “Get prepared for mass movement against the repressive government, we will shortly announce actions against the coalition.”
"The anti-government movement has started from Chittagong today. I'll visit all the divisional cities very soon to announce fresh movement," she said.
"The Awami League activists created a rein of terror in the country as leaders of the party failed to stop their activists from getting involved in violence over establishing supremacy," Zia said.
In her 66-minute address to a gathering of thousands at the port city, the first of the divisional rallies, Khaleda listed the "failures" of the Awami League-led government. She said, "They've not fulfilled any (election) pledge made to the people. They're busy fulfilling commitments to foreigners."
She urged all "freedom fighters" irrespective of opinion and party affiliation to unite against the agreements.
She expressed her view  about the recent agreements with India with current government as failure and asked her supporters: "I want to know from you whether Bangladesh will remain a sovereign nation or will it be a rent-dependent one. Are you ready to give transit to another country?"
On completion of her divisional tours, Khaleda Zia will address a grand public meeting in the capital probably in the middle of April next.
Different political analysts and activists viewing this rally as a great success of the opposition party.
