Just few hours after the lawmakers of Bangladesh have expressed their grave concern over the disruption of utilities, such as gas and power supplies, India has expressed thir interest to setting up of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal in Bangladesh in a joint venture. The members of parliament (JS) discussed the problems with finance minister AMA Muhith at a pre-budget discussion Thursday and proposed government to take immediate decision to solve the energy crisis in the long-run. The finance minister informed them about LNG (liquefied natural gas). India’s propose LNG terminal will be used to create a power generation capacity of around 1,000MW. According to the initial proposal, Bangladesh will use the power to meet their energy demand and also power will be supplied to India through a transmission link being set up between the two countries by Power Grid Corp. of India Ltd (PGCIL). The details of the plan would be decided after a Bangladeshi delegation visits India shortly to study the LNG terminals in the country. India has two LNG regasification terminals. Both are located in Gujarat. One liquefied natural gas terminal is owned by Petronet LNG Ltd. The capacity for this LNG terminal is 7.5 million tonnes per annum, or mtpa. The other by Shell India Pvt. Ltd with the capacity of 3.6 mtpa. The other terminals which are in the pipeline or at proposal stage include the ones at Dabhol (Maharastra), Kochi (Kerala), Ennore (Tamil Nadu) and Mundra (Gujarat). Press minister at the Bangladesh high commission in New Delhi Enamul Hoque Chowdhry told, “Both sides are discussing the proposal and the technical people are having meetings.” Indian press informed that the proposal was made to Tawfiq-e-Elahi Chowdhury, energy adviser to the prime minister of Bangladesh.
