Apr 27, Bangladesh (Tazakhobor.com): The private television Channel 1 went off air Tuesday evening after the government ordered its closure. The BNP chairperson, Khaleda Zia, on Tuesday night blasted the government for closing down Channel 1 on a lame excuse and demanded immediate reopening of the private television channel. Opposition Leader Khaleda Zia was addressing the members of the new committee of Dhaka city north unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at her office at Gulshan tonight. After the meeting in a press conference Khaleda accused the government that they had closed down the television channel for political reasons as it used to broadcast objective news. This is the 2nd private television station that the Awami League government has shut down in the span of less than six months. This is the second such censorious clamp-down since the Awami League returned to power in December 2008. The first one was 24 hour news channel, Jamuna TV. On this press conference she also rejected the result of Bhola-3 by-election and said, “No election was held in Bhola and BNP was defeated through massive rigging. EC failed to hold free and fair election in Bhola.” She pointed the Election commotion as controversial and demanded the resignation of three election commissioners. Khaleda Zia also criticized the government for price increases of daily necessities, unstable condition in the garment industries, extortion, tender manipulation and oppression on women. And informed press that the anti-government programme for would be announced after a divisional rally, which will be ended on May 18th.
