Police and witnesses said the clash ensued at about 11:00am after some BCL activists led by Kamrul Hasan Ripon, president of the university unit attacked some ordinary students during a protest demanding that the dormitories of the university be recovered from occupiers. Then the rival BCL activists led by general secretary Gazi Abu Syed attacked Kamrul group triggering the battle.

Female students and a teacher of the geography department Sayda Nazia Ishrat were injured as the assailants attacked Milon at the faculty building. Among other Shaila Akhter, Tonusri Dey, Suraya Akhter, Rina Akhter and Tonni were also reported injured and admitted to National Medical College Hospital.

Over 200 students of both the groups chased each other with clubs and hurled brickbats. The clash continued until midday.

Later police reached the campus and arrested Mamun and Babul of GS Gazi faction of BCL. Police also deployed Additional contingents of police to avert any untoward situation.
