The garment owners' association said the decision was taken in the wake of continuous labour unrest for last couple of weeks. At least 100 people were injured in a series of clashes throughout Monday between ready-made garment workers and police at Ashulia on the outskirts of the capital. Abdus Salam Murshedy, BGMEA president informed press that the factory owners had taken the decision in light of the prevailing situation and the apprehension of the owners. The Ashulia factory owners have been suffering from insecurity due to the recent unrest among workers demanding a minimum wage of Tk 5,000 per month. In the last few days several factories were ransacked at Ashulia industrial area, as workers abandoned their jobs to join protests for a wage hike. Around 50,000 workers joined the protests for wage hike. Previously BGMEA chief Abdus Salam Murshedy said at least 76 factories were "compelled to close down" for the day on Saturday due to the protests. Poor wages and working conditions, and refusal of the factory owners to honour wage agreements are leading to frequent violence, Vienna-based International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC) said in a global survey released in Dhaka on Saturday. According to the survey Bangladesh's garment sector workers are "the world's most poorly paid" and their rights are being abused increasingly. Want To See Your Report/Story here? Send it to
