The programme was set to start at 11am but the law enforcers barred the BNP central leaders in front of National Press Club, Farmagate, Ittefaq crossing and Shapla intersection in Motijheel while they were trying to form a human chain. Police charged baton to disperse hundreds of leaders and activists including BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia's adviser Prof MA Mannan, Ahmed Azam Khan, former MP Selim Reza Habib and Juba Dal general secretary Saiful Alam Nirab near Pragati Centre at Farmgate. The activist died in a stampede when police clashed with demonstrators in Naogaon town. At least 30 people were hurt in Dhaka, and the rest in several cities and district headquarters including Chittagong port. The Chittagong metropolitan BNP prepared to form a 25 kilometre stretch human chain as part of the party's announced protest programme on Wednesday but when the leaders and activists tried to form human chains at Bohoddarhat, Dewanhat and different other points in the city , they were barred by the law enforcers where police arrested nearly 100 activists. Witnesses and officials said Wednesday's protests were the most widespread since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took office in January last year. BNP announced the programme demanding an end to political repression by the Awami League-led grand alliance government, withdrawal of 'false' cases against the party leaders and release of all leaders, including standing committee member Mirza Abbas, vice-president Shamsher Mobin Chowdhury and MP Shahiduddin Chowdhury Annie—all arrested during the June 27 hartal.
