Latest: Government Withdrawn The Value Added Tax (VAT) on Tuition Fees Students of private universities had blockaded the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway at Kakali, Banani and were demanding the withdrawal of 4 percent Value Added Tax (VAT) on their tuition fees, and protesting the previous day's police aggression. On last budget government imposed a 4.5 percent VAT on tuition fees of the students of private universities. Protesting this, students of the private universities took to the streets on Monday and Tuesday in the city demanding withdrawal of the VAT on their tuition fees. They also clashed with police injuring at least 30 people. The agitated students also vandalised at least 25 vehicles during the clash. Police also picked up seven students from the spot on Tuesday and freed them on undertakings yesterday.
