RMG Workers Minimum Wage Set At Tk 3000: Garments Textile Workers Rejected

June 29, Dhaka, Bangladesh (Tazakhobor.com): The government has announced the new minimum salary structure for readymade garment workers at Tk 3,000 and Tk 2,500 for those apprentices.

At a media conference labor minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain announced the new wage and declared that the new pay package will take effect from Nov 1 after completion of legal procedures.
In the new wage structure, seven general grades and one apprentice grade have been set for the garment workers. The minimum wage will be Tk 3000 ($42). The chiefs of business bodies FBCCI, BGMEA and BKMEA, present at the briefing.
For other grades, the new wage will be: sixth grade: Tk 3210; fifth grade: Tk 3455; fourth grade: Tk 3763; third grade: Tk 4,120; second grade: Tk 7200; and the first grade: Tk 9300.
Although government expressed its optimism that the new pay scale would be implemented within three months, the owners of the over 4500 factories in which the workers are employed were hesitant about committing to the new pay scale within the given timeframe.
On the other hand, the Bangladesh Garments Textile Workers Federation, the Samajtantrik Sramik Front and other garment workers organizations have denounced the newly-set minimum wage of Tk 3000, terming it ‘unjust’.
The rejection came on Thursday hours after the government announced Tk 3000 as minimum wage for readymade garment workers.
