Workers Denied New RMG Wage: Demonstrated Massive Protests E-mail

June 30, Dhaka, Bangladesh (Tazakhobor.com): Several thousands of garment workers went on rampage at different parts of the capital Dhaka on Friday, protesting a wage structure providing a minimum monthly pay of Tk 3,000.

Garment worker leaders, however, expressed disappointment over the new pay scale as they have been bargaining for Tk 5,000 for years. Hours after the announcement of the new pay scale, Garments Sramik Oikya Parisad, Jatiya Sramik Jote and Garments Sramik Jote rejected and asked to reconsider it.
Witnesses said thousand of  workers from different nearby factories gathered near Nabisco at Shahid Tajuddin Ahmed Sarani in Tejgaon Industrial area around 8:30am while over 1,000 workers gathered under Mohakhali Flyover at Chairman Bari around the same time. Police put barricade and tried to disperse demonstrators taking preparation to bring out processions there.
Dissatisfied with the new pay scale agitated garments workers staged demonstration and started damaging glass walls, signboards at many business centres, banks and offices on both sides of the roads including Navana Tower, Habib Super Market, Jabbar Tower at Gulshan Avenue at Gulshan-1, United Commercial Bank at Mohakhali Commercial area, Prime Bank at Amtali in Mohakhali. They blocked four points in the area including Sat Rasta, Nabisco crossing, Mahakhali and Gulshan Link road in the morning. Later, the ready garment workers with rod and sticks stormed into the three-storey building of Rupom Dyeing and Printing Industry and ransacked the two floors of the building. They also destroyed 90 pieces readymade clothes of the industry by setting fire to those
On the Road they vandalized private cars and motorcycles on the road. The protesters damaged mostly glass walls of the more than 200 business establishments and around seven vehicles during the demonstrations.
Vehicular movements in Mohakhali, Tejgaon industrial area, Banani Chairman Bari, Mohakhali commercial area and Gulshan-1 and 2 were interrupted for around four hours from 8:30am as the workers took to the streets for reviewing the structure declared on Thursday and due to take effect on November 1.
The workers also pelted brickbats at the police. Police lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control.
