On Wednesday The parliament plunged into pandemonium as members of the treasury and opposition benches shouted at each other after an opposition lawmaker made derogatory remarks on Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. A number of lawmakers from both the sides advanced towards each other in an aggressive mood in the house. Abuses flew from all corners with a dumbfounded deputy speaker, Shawkat Ali, who was presiding over the session at the time, scarcely able to control the situation. He was twice seen pronouncing order for discipline amid the furore that lasted at least five minutes.
The lawmakers were heard shouting off the microphone ‘Dhar Shalake’ and ‘Bosh Shala’ on the parliament floor. Most of the lawmakers were seen hurling abuses plunging the house into a complete disorder. The uproar was triggered by comments made by Shammi Akhter of BNP (reserved seat-38) that there was no one to mourn, not even any Awami League leaders, when Sheikh Mujibur Rahman died. ‘There was none to say “innalillah”,’ she said referring to an unnamed Awami League leader who had reportedly said after Mujib’s death that Bangladesh was now ‘free of a Pharaoh [ruler]’. Her remarks prompted angry protests from most of the ruling party lawmakers. They shouted at the chair asking him to immediately expunge the objectionable and un-parliamentary words. The chair then allowed the chief whip, Abdus Shahid, to speak. The chief whip also demanded that the derogatory remarks be expunged from the proceedings. The uproar continued, and the chair allowed Iqbalur Rahim, a ruling party lawmaker, to take the floor to deliver on the thanks-giving motion on the presidential speech. Iqbalur countered Shammi’s remarks by saying that a BNP lawmaker had branded Mujib a Pharaoh. But had the leader of the opposition, Khaleda Zia, been present in the house at the moment, she would have called him an angel as it was Mujib who had made Ziaur Rahman accept Khaleda in his family after the liberation war. As the opposition lawmakers rose to their feet asking for microphone, a ruling party lawmaker in the backbench, Zainul Abedin of Meherpur-1 constituency, shouted ‘shut up’ at them. In response, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anny of BNP left his seat and invited his rival apparently to a duel calling him names. As the two advanced towards each other, senior lawmakers from both the sides, especially the two chief whips, intervened and calmed them. The speaker then asked Iqbalur Rahim to continue his speech. As he started, the opposition lawmakers asked the speaker to allow them to speak. Being denied the chance they walked out of the house at 8:05pm. The deputy speaker concluded the day’s business on the presidential speech, and announced that the un-parliamentary words the opposition lawmakers had pronounced in the house would be expunged. Rising on point of order, Tarana Halim of Awami League said she was stunned watching the lawmakers using filthy words in the house. She called it a shame.
