At a full commission meeting, the UGC also condemned what it said were attempts by some quarters to destabilise the situation. It called upon everyone to act responsibly to maintain a congenial atmosphere for higher education, said a press release from the commission.
The atmosphere at Jahangirnagar University has been tense since a student was killed by some Chhatra League men alleged to be blessed by the vice-chancellor. To make the situation worse, the proctor yesterday assaulted the president of the teachers association. A faction of teachers of Jahangirnagar University has announced to boycott all academic activities demanding removal of the university's proctor.
At Jagannath University, students have been agitating against a fee hike, incurring the wrath of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student body associated with the ruling Awami League. Bangladesh Chhatra League activists at Jagannath University yesterday assaulted students campaigning for class boycott in protest at fee hike. Around 11:00am, as 10 to 12 students went to political science department and asked students to leave classes, a group of BCL men swooped on them. They were beaten and driven out of the campus. Asked about the incident, the university vice-chancellor said unruly students faced the wrath of other students as they misbehaved with Prof Anwara Begum, head of the department. They were, however, saved by Anwara herself as she sympathised with them. Later, the university authorities issued notice upon eight students, asking them why punitive measures will not be taken against them for creating anarchy on the campus, misbehaving with teachers and obstructing admission processes.
In Sylhet, classes at Shahjalal University were suspended yesterday following overnight clashes between BCL and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists. Sust Registrar Ishfaqul Hossain said, after an emergency meeting on the night of the incident, the university authorities suspended all academic activities.
