Dhaka, Bangladesh (Tazakhobor.com): Both Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) & Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) witnessed another fall on Thursday, the closing day of the week.

The benchmark general index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DGEN) shed 77 points or 1.7 percent to reach 4,486 points from the previous day’s closing of 4,564. The trading opened amidst a steep rise, with gains of 56 points in just five minutes to reach 4,617 points. However, the DGEN then picked up a downtrend which continued till 12:20pm with several slight recoveries. Later, there were three attempts to recover but by 1:55pm the DGEN started sliding again, descending steeply to reach the day’s lowest value of 4,474 points at 2:55pm. The key index of Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) - CSCX –also lost 194.31 points today.
Absence of institutional investors participation pulled down the single-day turnover of the DSE to Tk 189 crore or Tk 1896.288 million today which was Tk 262 crore or Tk 2626.321 million on Wednesday. The CSE turnover was Tk 28.08 crore which was Tk 37.70 crore on Wednesday.
Of the issues traded at the DSE today, 44 gained, 203 suffered losses and 9 remained unchanged. At the CSE, a total of 183 issues were traded today. Of them, 31 gained, 146 suffered losses and 6 remained unchanged.
The investors, both individual and institutional ones, were reluctant in the market today, as the central bank announced its new but tightened monetary policy.
However Bangladesh Bank said on Thursday it does not count the capital market unproductive or risky as it moves to stem the flow of loans to barren sectors. Allah Malik Kazemi, senior consultant to the Bangladesh Bank governor, made the remarks while announcing the monetary policy for the second half of the current fiscal (January – June) on Thursday.
Atiur Rahman said, "Flow of credit into unproductive sectors, including consumer loans, will be discouraged to keep adequate the flow of credit into private productive sectors."
In reply to a query, he said, "Unproductive sectors have risks, so productivity will be encouraged."
A reporter asked him whether they are considering the capital market as an unproductive and risky sector.
