The government has chosen IRIS Corporation Berhad, A Malaysia based company for a contract of  Tk 526 crore to launch machine-readable passports and visas, only months away from an international deadline. According to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), all countries must present machine-readable passports (MRP) and machine-readable visas (MRV) April 1, 2010.

Approval for the contract finally declared on Thursday after a meeting of Cabinet Committee on public purchase, deputy secretary of the Cabinet Division Md Nur-ur-Rahman.  IRIS Corporation Barhad was again given the job despite cancelling it initially.

Mr Rahman, the deputy secretary said, IRIS will manufacture and supply 6.6 million machine-readable passports in three installments under the project "Introduction of Machine Readable Passport and Machine Readable Visa in Bangladesh.

Sensitive topics including the 1989 crackdown at Tiananmen Square, the Dalai Lama and the banned Falun Gong spiritual movement are now avaialable in Google.cn. Within hours of Google's announcement that it was no longer willing to self-censor in China, Google made this censored tropic available to Chiniese people.

Previously, a search for "Tiananmen" would only return images of the square itself. By early Wednesday, Google.cn linked to pages with information about the bloody government crackdown in 1989, though the page appears to have fluctuated between uncensored and somewhat censored throughout Wednesday.

 Google made this censored tropic available  just after they mentioned "highly sophisticated and targeted attack"  and "We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all.".

Three of the five former army officers who were convicted for Sheikh Mujibur Rahman killing and condemned to death for the 1975 killing of Bangabandhu have sought presidential mercy through the jail authorities yesterday.

On A press briefing at his office yesterday evening (9th January, 2010) Inspector General (prisons) Brig Gen Ashraful Islam Khan mentioned, “Lt Col (artillery) Mohiuddin Ahmed, Major Bazlul Huda and Major (lancer) AKM Mohiuddin Ahmed submitted their petitions to the jail authorities”.
