BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the government must take an initiative for a caretaker government based on the annulled 13th amendment to the constitution. He also added, “the government has created the political crisis scrapping the 13th amendment to the constitution. Now they have to take the initiative to resolve it through amending the constitution in light of the 13th amendment. As they have two-thirds majority in parliament, the ball is now in their court,” he said.BNP acting secretary general Fakhrul Islam was talking to reporters after a joint meeting of the party at its Nayapaltan central office. He once again said the next general election must be held under a non-party caretaker government and his party will wage a one-point tougher movement after Eid to force the government to reinstate the caretaker system. Asked about the harsher programme to be launched after Eid, he said the party’s standing committee and 18-partay alliance leaders will finalise it.Replying to another question about the framework of the CG, the BNP leader said their position on the framework of a non-party neutral government is clear. “The scrapped 13th amendment to the constitution is our party stand. We can only discuss who will be the chief adviser.” Fakhrul said they are talking to the jurists and constitution experts about the Supreme Court’s bar to making the immediate retired Chief Justice adviser to the caretaker government. When his attention was drawn to the Prime Minister’s interim government proposal, he said the government is yet to give them any proposal in parliament or any place in this regard. The Prime Minister only told BBC about it in an interview, he added.Mentioning that any unconstitutional power is unacceptable to BNP, Fakhrul said many former leaders and grand alliance partner Ershad are talking about third force. “We aren’t worried about it. BNP won’t accept any undemocratic and unconstitutional force. The people of the country also don’t support such force.”
