Addressing a discussion organised by Bangladesh Projonmo Academy (BPA) at National Press Club in the city, Moudud Ahmed said the government has belittled itself by trying to disgrace Dr Yunus. “The more Awami League will try to humiliate Dr Yunus, the more they will be belittled. It’s pity that they still can’t understand that.” On August 2, the cabinet approved a proposal for amending the Grameen Bank Ordinance 1983. It also asked the Banking and Financial Institution Division to inform it in consultation with the Bangladesh Bank how much salary and allowances Dr Muhammad Yunus, the former Managing Director of Grameen Bank, had withdrawn after his 60 years of age.It also directed the Banking and Financial Institution Division to be sure whether the withdrawal of those salary and allowances was done legally.Directives were also given to the National Board of Revenue (NBR) whether there was any evidence of tax evasion in case of Dr Muhammad Yunus’ foreign currency income shown as wage earners income.Terming the government’s move against the ex-Grameen Bank MD ‘unthinkable’, the BNP leader said when countries like China, India and the USA are showing respect to Dr Yunus, the Bangladesh government is trying to undermine him.Mentioning that this government has no respect for any one, Moudud said Dr Yunus is a victim of state-sponsored conspiracy. The government has tainted the image of the country by hatching conspiracy against a personality of international repute, he added. The former law minister warned that people will respond to the government’s actions against Yunus through ballots in the next general election.Turning to the caretaker government issue, Moudud said his party will force the government to reinstate the caretaker government through amendment to the constitution. He said Bangladesh has been identified as a ‘corrupt country’ across the world due to government’s corruption in the Padma Bridge project. Former Commerce Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury said no civilised country can play game with a noble laureate like Dr Yunus.Vice-president of Muktjuddha Dal Central Committee Abedur Rahman, among others, spoke at the discussion presided over by Adviser of BPA Mehbub Rahman.
