5 Killed, Dozens Injured In Countrywide Hartal Today

At least five people were killed, more than 70 injured and 50 others held during countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Islamist groups protesting attacks on their Friday’s demonstrations which killed 4 and injured hundreds, and also demanding punishment to ‘atheist’ bloggers.
The deceased were identified as Shah Alam, Alamgir, Nazim Uddin, Nasir Ahmed and Helena.
During the hartal hour, the pro-hartal activists gathered at Gobindal village on Manikgang at 11:00am. On information, police rushed to the spot and interrupted them to gather. At that time, the angry picketers attacked with police. In retaliation, police opened fire to bring the situation under control, leaving one Helena dead on the spot and 35 others bullet-hit.
Later, Shah Alam, Alamgir, Nazim Uddin succumbed to their injuries at Singair Upazila Health Complex.
The rest injured people were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where Nasir Ahmed, son of Yusuf Ali, died while undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, Islamist parties called a daylong hartal in Manikganj for Monday protesting the killing incidents.
In Comilla: police held two picketers in front of Didar Market in Daulatpur while a Shibir activist was held from Miabazar under Chauddagram upazila in the morning.

In Moulvibazar: Three people were held while they gathered to bring out rally supporting the hartal and picket in Court road area around 8am.

In Bhola: police held three Jamaat-Shibir activists from Manpura and Charfashion upazilas suspecting subversive acts in the early hours of the day.

In Chandpur: Three people were injured in a chase and counter chase between the picketers and police in Puranbazar area around 7am. Police also held 5 pro-hartal activists from there.

In Khulna: At least eight people were injured in a clash between Jamaat-Shibir men and Chhatra League during the hartal around 11:30am.

Gazipur: Police held nine hartal supporters from Tongi, Joydebpur, Shreepur and Kapasia around 9am.

In Cox’s Bazar: At least eight people were injured in a BNP-Jamaat-Awami League clash at Pekua upazila of the district on Sunday.

Meanwhile, opposition BNP has already declared to stage demonstrations and hold a protest rally in the capital on Tuesday while in all district headquarters and metropolitan cities on February 28 to protest the killing.
